Justin Thornton Schneider
Gestalt Therapist in Madrid
My name is Justin and I am a gestalt therapist originally from the United States, based in Madrid. Both in and out of sessions I am deeply interested in people and the ways we seek to live fulfilling lives, often in the face of great uncertainty and pain.
When I am not in sessions or training, I find joy and grounding in making art and spending time with my dog in nature.
I believe in the power of the therapeutic process and therapeutic relationship. I am eternally grateful to all my clients and previous therapists for being the greatest teachers I have ever had.
How I work:
I aim to create a confidential and judgment-free space where we can mindfully explore and question any thought, feeling, dream, experience, desire. Curiosity, presence, creativity, compassion, playfulness, authenticity, and humor are principles that guide my practice.
I firmly believe that the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is paramount for effective therapy. Whether we meet online or in-person, I offer sessions in English and Spanish (and Spanglish), each lasting 50 minutes and typically scheduled weekly.

What is Gestalt Therapy?
Gestalt therapy invites us to break free from cycles of dwelling on the past or fretting about the future, guiding us to anchor ourselves in the present moment. The term "gestalt," originating from German, signifies "whole," highlighting the belief that each of us is a unified entity encompassing body, mind, and emotions. Developed by Fritz Perls and Laura Perls in the mid-20th century, Gestalt therapy emerged as a departure from traditional psychoanalysis, emphasizing a holistic approach to understanding and experiencing oneself.
How Gestalt Therapy Works:
Gestalt therapy operates on the principle that unresolved negative emotions like anger, pain, anxiety, and resentment need active expression in the present to be alleviated. By fostering self-awareness, we can better understand ourselves and see how our choices affect our health and relationships. Through activities such as role-playing, re-enactments, and creative exercises, we can explore different facets of identity, uncovering patterns in thoughts and behaviors to facilitate deeper self-understanding and personal growth. The goal is to empower you to live authentically, enhancing your overall well-being by integrating emotional and physical selves, and effectively confronting life's challenges.
